Elgin Youth Football League

Our goal is to develop well-rounded young men and women who learn not only the fundamentals of football, but also the importance of education and teamwork, in an atmosphere conducive to developing sound mind, body and character - and having a good time along the way. We practice the ideals of sportsmanship, scholarship and physical fitness. Our program stresses learning lessons of value far beyond the playing days, such as self-discipline, teamwork, concentration, friendship, leadership, and good sportsmanship.

Our coaches will do their very best to ensure that each player is utilized to his utmost potential and that their talents are used for the team's best advantage. The team comes before individuals. Safety is our top concern. Many of the exercises, drills, and team rules are there to ensure your child is physically and mentally fit for football. Each child is unique and will develop at his own pace. We will exercise their bodies and minds in an effort to develop the skills needed to execute the game of football.

Nothing in life, including football, is worthwhile unless you enjoy it and gain something from the experience. We're trying to win football games and we are going to set our goals high, but we won’t get down if we lose. Our football teams will not believe that a football loss is a tragedy. All we can ask of our kids is to do their best. If we win, Great! If we lose, it's not the end of the world. There will be another game along in a few days.

By the same token, we feel that we owe it to the players to do everything we can to make them winners. We plan to win every game because if you don’t, then you need to ask yourself which game you plan to lose, and if you’re planning to lose, why show up, or practice the week before?

We’re going to practice hard, we’re going to play hard and our scores will reflect this.

Football Ages and Weights   Each of the weight levels is designed to ensure the optimal amount of safety and equitable competition on the football field. We feel strongly that these age and weight designations accomplish this by ensuring our athletes are not over matched or disadvantaged based on the physical size of their opponents. The league in which we participate ( TCYFL ) strictly enforces these guidelines by requiring all teams to maintain copies of their player’s birth certificates and by requiring the players to weigh in before each game.

Flyweight   (Ages 5 - 6, 77lb max): Our full contact football program for 5 and 6 year old player’s is designed as non-competitive and purely instructional football. These players will play games and learn the fundamentals of football without keeping score and tallying wins and losses.

Bantamweight   (Ages 7 - 8, 90lb max*): The Bantamweight level is the first opportunity for our young football players to be competitive. This level is still focused on the basic fundamentals of the game but will now have the opportunity to keep score.

Featherweight (Ages 9 - 10, 100lb max*): At the Featherweight level our focus as always will remain on fundamentals. The veteran players are finally starting to fully understand the game and are grasping larger concepts like setting up plays and blitz schemes.

Middleweight (Ages 11 - 12, 110lb max*): Once our players reach the Middleweight level they are becoming more physically mature as well as recognizing their social surroundings. We continue to work and drill the fundamentals of the game while introducing new offensive and defensive schemes and concepts. It's at this level where you'll begin to see more of a passing game.

Lightweight   (Ages 13 - 14, 125lb max*): Our Lightweight football players are generally in middle school and as such their competitiveness and physical maturity increases accordingly. At this level from a football perspective we are prepping the players for the next stage which will be high school football. The team environment of our program also offers these kids an opportunity to make friends and gain confidence and social competence at a time when social pressures are beginning to mount. Football will offer a safe, supervised, and character building experience for these impressionable young athletes.

Heavyweight  (Ages 14, Unlimited Weight*): The Heavyweight level much like the Lightweight level is made up primarily of Middle School students. At Heavyweight no player will be turned away due to weight. There is no max weight however there are specific guidelines surrounding the eligibility of who can be a ball carrier. For more details see the Ages and Weights matrix.

 * Exceptions may be made for younger players who are heavier than their peers and for older players who are smaller than the majority of their peers. Please see the complete ages and weights matrix page for details.
